Moving house can be a very stressful time and using a moving house checklist is guaranteed to lessen that stress. There’s so much to do and so many things to remember it can be easy to forget to make all the necessary arrangements.

Packing your belongings

  • Make a decision about items you no longer want – could they be sold on a site like Vinted or given away to charity?
  • Start emptying and packing up rooms you use the least first
  • Don’t forget to clear out any garden sheds or outside spaces
  • Source strong and sturdy boxes, plus vacuum bags and other packing essentials
  • Mix light and heavy goods to spread the load and make lifting easier
  • Use bubble wrap, newspaper and other softening items to protect fragile goods
  • Label all boxes on the outside with contents and which room they’re from, noting if fragile – this will make it much easier to unpack in your new home
  • Bundle associated wires, chargers and label them clearly
  • Collate a tool kit for boxing/unboxing all your items efficiently
  • Pack a day and night bag for everybody moving with the essentials like a change of clothes and toiletries
  • Make a list of all items you have packed

Things to remember before your moving day

  • Cancel all rental agreements and direct debits
  • Notify your doctor, dentist, optician and vet – check you have enough medication
  • Notify banks, building societies and credit card companies
  • Confirm times and details with your moving company
  • Inform telephone company and other main services like the internet
  • Ask Royal Mail to re-route your post to make sure you don’t miss any letters
  • Tell TV licence, streaming subscriptions, DVLA and Passport Office
  • Clean out the freezer and allow it to defrost
  • Employ a plumber to remove items like washing machines and dishwashers
  • Keep all important documents together in a proper filing system
  • Collect any keys given to friends, family and neighbours
  • Record your current utility meter readings
  • Send out change of address notices to all your contacts

Arriving at your new property

  • Do a full sweep of the property and check it is in the condition you expected it to be
  • Note if there are any unexpected items left by the previous occupants
  • Confirm what boxes are going in which rooms with your removal workers
  • Check off your items as they are delivered into the house
  • Be sure to put your important documents into a safe but easily accessible place
  • Check the utility meters of your new property and note them down
  • Have a go at using all the keys for all the doors and windows – make sure they work
  • Plug in all your telephones, TVs and large appliances
  • Be sure to introduce yourself to any neighbours you see on moving day – it’s a great conversation starter
  • Remember – you don’t have to do everything immediately and on the first day! Give yourself a break!
